How does the cat mating calculator work?
Pick the sire's and dam's colours (by name or EMS code) and it computes the genetic probabilities of the kittens' colours and patterns from documented feline genetics — the base-colour, dilution, sex-linked orange, and tabby loci among others.
Is the result guaranteed?
No — genetics is probability, not certainty. The calculator honestly separates 'likely' from 'possible' outcomes and lists hidden genes the parents may carry without showing them, so a real litter can differ.
What is an EMS code?
A standardised European coding system describing a cat's breed, colour and pattern in short letters and digits — e.g. ny 11 means black golden shaded. The calculator accepts the code directly, or plain colour names.
Does it predict kitten eye colour?
It shows the expected adult eye-colour range plus strong genetic signals (like the blue eyes tied to colourpoint). All kittens are born blue-eyed; the final colour settles at roughly 6–8 weeks.
Is every pairing safe?
The calculator flags known not-recommended pairings — most notably fold-eared × fold-eared (Scottish Fold × Scottish Fold), which experts advise against for documented health reasons.
