Cat coat genetics

The genes behind a cat's colour and pattern — explained in plain language, the same model SANORIYAT's genetics engine uses.

B locus — black series

Controls: Whether the black pigment shows as black, chocolate or cinnamon.

D locus — dilution

Controls: Whether a colour is dense (full) or dilute (softened).

O locus — orange (red)

Controls: Red/cream colouring, and tortoiseshell in females.

A locus — agouti (tabby vs solid)

Controls: Whether the tabby pattern is visible or hidden under a solid coat.

Tabby pattern

Controls: The shape of the tabby markings: mackerel, classic, spotted or ticked.

I locus — silver & smoke

Controls: Whether the hair has a silver-white base (silver, smoke, chinchilla).

Golden

Controls: A warm golden undercoat instead of silver.

L locus — coat length

Controls: Whether the coat is short or long.

W locus — dominant white

Controls: A fully white coat that masks all other colour.
