The Scottish Fold is a medium-sized breed best known for the folded ears caused by a natural cartilage gene, giving it a rounded, owl-like look. It is typically calm, affectionate and adaptable to family life.
The folded ear: what to know
The fold comes from a natural gene that affects cartilage. Not every kitten in a litter folds: some keep upright ears (Scottish Straight), and both are the same breed.
The right pairing: fold × straight (or British). Fold × fold is not allowed in WCF: the same gene affects the cartilage of the whole body, and two copies of it cause serious joint and bone problems.
Scottish Fold or British?
Both are round-faced and calm. The difference you see is the ear: folded forward in the Scottish Fold, upright in the British. A British × Scottish Fold kitten is registered as Scottish.

They are generally known as calm, affectionate companions that adapt well to home life.
When do a kitten's ears fold?+
Kittens are born with straight ears; in the ones that carry the fold, the ears usually start folding in the third or fourth week. A kitten whose ears stay up is a Scottish Straight.
What is the difference between a Scottish Fold and a British Shorthair?+
They look alike, but the British has upright ears and usually a heavier build. A kitten of a British × Scottish Fold pairing is registered as Scottish, never as British (WCF).
Do Scottish Folds have health problems?+
The fold gene affects cartilage, not only in the ears. That is why fold × fold is not allowed in WCF. Ask about both parents, watch for a stiff tail or legs, and see a vet if the cat limps.
