An orange cat is «red» to breeders, and its colour comes from another gene (O). Golden is a warm undercoat on a black cat (ny) — and also on blue (ay) — with dark tips.

Will my kittens be golden?
Golden is recessive: a kitten is golden only when it gets it from the father and the mother. Golden × golden = every kitten golden. How much tipping (shaded or shell) still varies — it is polygenic, so it never gets a percentage.
Silver removes the pigment from the base of the hair and leaves it white (a cool look); golden leaves it warm gold. Same tipped structure, opposite undercoat.

The amount of tipping. Chinchilla (shell, ny 12) has only the very tips coloured and looks lighter; shaded (ny 11) has more colour down the hair and looks deeper.
